Well, January has come and gone and I'm still plowing through my new book, which I started in November. It's a horror/comedy for teens. I like the idea but I'm getting bogged down with some of the voices of the different characters. Note to new writers: Know your characters before you start writing. I know there are a lot of great writers out there that learn about their characters as they write the manuscript, but I just can't work that way. I like to know my charcaters inside out before I start to write so I can let them tell the story without me getting in the way. That's what has worked for me so far, but it can be a time consuming process.
On a different note, I've been lucky enough to talk with students from two schools about writing recently. Two weeks ago I met many of the students from Crichton Park Elementary and last week I met one grade four class from Joseph Giles Elementary. I had a great time working with everyone!
Take it cheezy,
James
