Distraction Deprivation
I'm hating the fact that I can't read whenever I want to, or watch TV at night to mellow out, or play video games with my son, or listen to audio books in the car. It's frustrating, but I'm also learning it's opened up time for my mind to be creative. Not only that, but I've dealt with a few issues that were floating around in my subconscious, but that I'd buried under a bunch of distractions that were constantly filling up any time I had to think things through. Then, when you take out the distractions, you're suddenly forced to think about these issues and deal with them. That was frustrating at first because I didn't want to deal with those things, but once you get through them, then you're lighter than before and you can start to find new creative solutions to those issues and a whole bunch of other things.
Tomorrow at noon I'm allowed to break my distraction fast, but I'm going to try it for another week, just for kicks and giggles to see what happens. However, I'm going to give myself permission to read for fun. Basically, I've decided I'm going to remove any distractions someone wouldn't have had in 1865 (the year Mark Twain published The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, one of my fav short stories). The only caveat being that I can go online to blog and keep up with my emailing. But no TV, no video games, no radio, no audio books. Reading good, screen time bad.
