What's With The Lists?

Why is Julia Cameron getting me to make lists about things like, Things I'd Like to Own? I think the point is that as adults we lose our ability to dream and fantasize about things we'd like to have and things we'd like to do. We tell ourselves it's too late or it's too expensive or wanting this thing is silly. However, when we were kids we didn't judge ourselves so harshly for dreaming about being a writer or a pilot or a vampire hunter and we didn't chastise ourselves for wanting a Ferrari or dreaming about getting a dog even though our parents told us that was never going to happen. We flipped through the toy section of catalogs and happily picked out all the toys we wanted to own. Did we feel guilty about doing that? I didn't? I loved going picking out the toys I wanted almost as much as actually getting those toys. I loved dreaming about being a professional soccer player or working as a sports play-by-play announcer. But then, as adults, we lose that happiness, we lose that freedom to fantasize about the way things could be and we lose the ability to imagine changing things because we tell ourselves that's impossible. I think Julia Cameron wants us to be more like kids, she wants us to fantasize and imagine not to feel guilty about it. So what if it's outlandish, it's just fantasizing right? And who knows, maybe all the dreaming will make us think of ways to bring these fantasies into reality.
