Week 9 - Focus and Drumming

Time is flying by! I'm still doing the Morning Pages, and I'm still a big fan. I now think keeping a personal journal is a must for any writer, perhaps for any artist. Besides doing the Morning Pages, I think the biggest thing I've learned so far is that I'm way, WAY more creative and productive when I unplug myself from the usual electronic distractions that fill up my spare time. For the ten days that I was completely committed to forgoing TV, the radio, video games, and reading for pleasure, I was at my most creative and was more focused on getting work done. I also went on more walks and more runs. On top of that, I felt more at ease and more rested (mostly because I went to bed earlier since there wasn't a whole lot to do at night). There've been loads of studies done about what to eat, what to drink, or what kinds of activities to do in order to become more creative, but for me it's all about getting rid of distractions. I'll be starting a new book soon, and I think I'll try to go on another distraction vacation while I'm working on it. I'll let you know how that goes.

As a side note, one of the suggestions Cameron makes is taking up a musical instrument. My son is learning to play the drums, so I decided to watch a few YouTube videos to learn a few basic beats. It's kind of a father/son bonding activity. Anyway, I've discovered that drumming relaxes me a lot. Not only that, but it kind of brings me into myself, not unlike meditation.

Now, onto Week 9. Hoorah!
