Finishing the First Week
The first week of following The Artist's Way (by Julia Cameron), was interesting. I really enjoyed doing the Morning Pages, which are three pages of stream of consciousness journal writing. I found they were an excellent way to vent whatever was on my mind and as a result I felt like my creative writing came out easier. I also did my Artist Date. This is an activity you're supposed to do in order to spend some time with the artist within. It's meant to be fun and frivolous. It's also supposed to be pre-planned, which is where I fell short. I had it on my mind all week, but didn't do any planning until the last minute. In the end, I took an hour walk around my old neighbourhood, the one I grew up in. This was also cathartic, because I got to see places I usually don't see all that often, or places I might rush by if I was in the area. It was nice to reminisce because I have many fond memories of my childhood, but it also helps in moving on with life. Those were the places I filled with many happy memories in the past, now it's time to create new happy memories in new places.
So, after Week #1, I would say I'd recommend keeping a Morning Pages style journal and I'd set aside some time for yourself, some time to be alone with your thoughts, and why not spend that time wandering around in your old neighbourhood or looking at old photos or calling an old friend. It's great to look back because I think it helps you to look forward.
Now on to Week #2!
