Week 7! The Farthest I've Ever Made It!

I've tried to complete the Artist's Way several times in the past, but the farthest I've ever made it was Week 6, and even then it was a half-hearted and (frankly) pathetic attempt. I've finally made it by Week 6 and I'm on to Week 7. That being said, I've missed a whole bunch of activities over the past 6 weeks. On Week 6 alone I missed collecting 5 interesting rocks, collecting 5 flowers or leaves, and sending 5 postcards to friends. I almost missed baking something, but I'm actually waiting for my chocolate chip cookies to come out of the oven as I type this entry. Fascinating, right? Okay, okay, I admit, reading what I've done and haven't done isn't edge-of-your-seat material. If you're here, you're probably more interested in what I've learned about creativity and how you can apply that to your life. Here's the number one thing I've learned over the past six weeks:

If you're going to try to become more creative you've actually got to do the things that will help you become more creative. You've got to be proactive. Creativity is not going to spontaneously enhance unless you're willing to help the process along.

Three easy things you can do: keep a journal and write in it every morning, take distraction vacations (turn off the electronic chatter), actually do the art you've been thinking about (write the book, paint the picture, make that film).

Cameron has some good advice about doing. She says that art is not about thinking something up, it's about getting something down. Really, you could write in a journal until you're blue in the face, but that book ain't going to write itself.
